Vessels and Containers

From desiccators to Petri dishes, tanks to specimen jars, DWK Life Sciences line of lab vessels and containers is as varied as the applications it supports. Nearly all of our options are manufactured from low-extractable borosilicate glass to maximize chemical compatibility and minimize the potential for leachables to contaminate samples.

While the uses for lab vessels are many, our consistent quality and ready access to inventory are singular. And of course, because we understand that things get misplaced or occasionally break, we stock replacement parts and accessories for dishes, desiccators, jars, and tanks.

Universal, Versatile Lab Staples

Petri dishes, the ubiquitous shallow glass dishes used for culturing were designed to allow an even distribution of culture medium and guarantee a distortion-free view. The lids of the Petri dishes rest directly on the base, preventing disturbance of the contents from the turbulent airflow. This is well suited for reactions with long incubation times, at high temperatures, or with sensitive culture media.

DWK Life Sciences KIMAX® Petri dish features a reinforced beaded edge to resist mechanical breakage and help in centering the bottom inside the cover. We’ve incorporated a combination of different color marking spots to make identification of parts when sorting, selecting, and assembling pairs quick and easy.

The concave circular shape of the watch glass results in a very versatile lab vessel, well-suited for working with very small quantities (e.g. preliminary samples). In addition, the watch glass makes a handy beaker cover, can hold solids when being weighed, and can be used as an evaporation surface for liquids. Ours are available in borosilicate or soda-lime glass.

Wide low-form KIMAX® crystallizing dishes provide a large liquid surface that favors the
evaporation of excess solvents. The flat shape, as well as the flat bottom, provide even
evaporation of solvents and thus the crystallization of solids from solutions and suspensions.

We recommend the glass Feigl spot plate with its cup-like depressions for use in analytical chemistry to detect certain substances with reagent solutions and to observe reactions on a small scale. Spot tests can not only be used to identify reactions but can also be used for purity testing.

When you need to store moisture-sensitive substances or dry moist products, we recommend using a desiccator, available in non-vacuum and vacuum-suitable configurations with a ground lid. We also offer a selection of sieve plates in either metal or porcelain. The KIMBLE® soda-lime desiccator comes with an aluminum plate and is available in a valved configuration for vacuum applications, or with a plain lid and plastic knob for non-vacuum use. The DURAN® vacuum desiccator set is a mobile design with a threaded outlet (GL 32) in the lid (with open-topped aperture cap for stopcock with spindle). For your convenience, accessories and replacement parts are available and include O-rings for sealing, porcelain or stainless steel desiccator plates, neoprene bushings, lids with collar, and lid with a knob.

Exhibition glasses and museum jars are used to store and preserve organisms and dissections. These containers can be tightly closed and sealed to protect both the contents and the viewer. The large glass surfaces optimize the view of the glass contents and make these vessels ideal for experiments involving video monitoring of samples or other visual observations.

Our dissolution vessels, designed for dissolution or tablet testing for drug bioavailability, are produced with a precision tolerance flat flange and hemispherical bottom that fits popular instrumentation. Clear, low extractable borosilicate glass conforms to USP Type 1 requirements for pharmaceutical testing compliance.

Our TLC (thin layer chromatography) tank features clear sides to allow unobstructed visual
inspection of TLC plates and contains a centering baffle to support plates during development. For your convenience, they are supplied with lids — nonslip, latch, or standard — and, of course, replacement parts are always available. Nonslip lids have a knob for easy lifting and PTFE retainers. Latch lids are designed to hold the lid firmly to the developing tank, greatly improving the stability of the saturated environment for developing TLC plates. Both the cylindrical and rectangular developing tanks are offered with glass or polyethylene lids, provide maximum vapor phase saturation with a minimum amount of solvent.

Frequently Asked Questions

Our desiccators are designed for use under an absolute vacuum (-1 bar). Before evacuation, we recommend that the glass surfaces of the desiccator be checked for damage such as scratches, cracks, or nicks. Damaged desiccators must not be used for safety reasons. Never expose desiccators to abrupt pressure changes. For example, do not suddenly ventilate evacuated vessels.
