Safety Coated Glassware

KIMCOTE® brand safety-coated glassware is the most durable lab product, designed with a special PVC coating which keeps glassware fragments intact in the case of accidental breakage. This safety innovation prevents chain reactions of harmful laboratory accidents from occurring, including glassware breakage, spills of toxic or corrosive chemicals, and exposure to harmful chemicals and their side reactions. When performing experiments involving expensive samples, KIMCOTE® delivers an extra layer of safety in preserving precious samples. Laboratory applications of safety-coated glassware include pressure applications, chemical storage, transportation of samples, handling of hazardous chemicals, and harmful biologicals and acids. Safety coating technology features a writable surface and is autoclavable, microwavable, washable, as well as resistant to abrasions and odorless.

KIMCOTE® is offered as a standard catalog item for many products including cylinders, bottles, HPLC reservoirs, carboys, culture tubes, volumetric flasks, filter flasks, and boiling flasks. It is also available in custom configurations and can be applied across the full range DWK Life Sciences portfolio.

Our safety-coated glassware delivers improved grip the center of mass shifts while pouring but is still transparent for easy reading of cylinder graduations. To match different needs we offer a variety of sizes including 100, 250, 500, 1000, and 2000 mL. Plus, for added assurance, all KIMCOTE ® cylinders include SAFE-GARD ® bumpers. To deliver calibrations our reverse metric scale appears in white for easy reading. The bottom of the hexagonal ground base is not safety coated to maximize stability. Glass conforms to ASTM E438, Type 1, Class A requirements.

Clear safety coated glassware also benefits screw thread culture tube users by enhancing biohazard protection due to accidental breakage. Uniform wall thickness helps to increase resistance to mechanical shock and threads comply with Glass Packaging Institute (GPI) requirements. KIMCOTE ® safety coatings are the right choice for biohazard test protocols and better grip when handling or transporting in-lab. Phenolic caps are supplied unattached and offered in white rubber liner or PTFE-faced rubber liner options. Designed using 33 expansion borosilicate glass for maximum heat transfer and chemical resistance, our safety-coated glassware conforms to ASTM E982, Type VI, Class A requirements.

Our six popular sizes of safety coated volumetric flasks are available in heavy-duty, wide-mouth and standard versions. Each includes a corresponding glass stopper. Heavy-duty, wide-mouth volumetric flasks are designed to Class A tolerances indicated by a single graduation ring calibrated “To Contain” mark. Glass conforms to ASTM E438, Type 1, Class A and USP Type 1 requirements.

Glassware used for rotary evaporators gives users with safety coatings an improved grip, wet or dry. Safety-coated, heavy-wall boiling flasks — ideal as a collection flask with rotary evaporators from all major manufacturers — features a spherical joint. The lower portion of safety-coated recovery flasks fits standard heating mantles and features a square joint for standard connections to rotary evaporators. Safe for use on non-direct flames or heating contact to 110° C (230° F), safety glass conforms to ASTM E438, Type 1, Class A and USP Type 1 requirements.

A glass bottle coating applied to GL 45 media bottles, for example, improves grip and increases safety. All of DWK Life Sciences GL 45 safety-coated glass bottles include a pouring and are offered in sizes ranging from 100 to 2000 mL sizes. Solid top polypropylene caps in blue, white, and orange colors have internal molded sealing rings for secure fit. High temperature, acid-resistant red caps are available as well as membrane caps designed so that you can access content without removing the cap. The safety coating is autoclavable to 121° C (250° F), can withstand refrigeration to -20°C (-4°F), and is also microwave safe. Marking anywhere on the KIMCOTE ® safety coating is possible including the writing patch area. Use of water-based markers allows easy removal, whereas solvent-based permanent markers, dyes, and stains cannot be removed. Glass conforms to ASTM E438, Type 1, Class A and USP Type 1 requirements. Autoclavable solution bottles are also available.

We recommend safety-coated glass bottles — especially instrument reservoir bottles — to
strengthen lab safety and limit UV exposure. ULTRA-WARE ® safety-coated HPLC reservoirs
offers efficient mobile-phase filtration and feature flat or conical bottoms. The fully enclosed system filters and delivers liquid chromatography mobile phase and saves time, reduces solvent consumption, and lowers exposure to organics. Reservoir bottles with a conical bottom allow users to capture every last drop of their mobile phase, saving time and reducing chromatography solvent consumption. When paired with a filtration cap system, the ULTRA-WARE ® line is a one-step solution for filtration, solvent mixing, degassing, and solvent delivery to the chromatography instrument.

Because reservoir bottles are often handled at or above shoulder height, the safety coating is essential to help retain glass fragments and liquid contents if there is a breakage, allowing a reasonable amount of time for safe disposal. Also, components are designed with chemically inert materials and have high chemical resistance to chromatography solvents which minimizes leaching of extractables.

Safety coated carboys — offered in convenient sizes from 9.5 to 19 L — feature rubber
stoppers. Narrow mouth solution bottles, on the other hand, come in sizes from 100-2000 mL and are offered with ground-joint mouths to receive flathead stoppers. Other high-handling glassware offerings include atmospheric environmental reservoirs and bottom hose outlet reservoirs. For safety, purity, and strength, all safety-glass bottle coatings are applied to glass that conforms to ASTM E438, Type 1, Class A requirements.

Not every application requires the use of coated glassware. We recommend, however, that you opt for safety-coated glassware any time you’re using rare or expensive samples,
experimenting with or using pressure applications, storing chemicals, transporting samples, or handling hazardous chemicals, harmful biologicals or corrosive acids.
