Sedimentation analysis and thus the determination of water quality e.g. in waste water and rainwater is an essential topic in environmental analysis. Named after the German engineer Karl Imhoff, these graduated glass cones are used to measure the volume of settleable solids in a one litre volume of water or wastewater. From a suspension particles of different size settle on the bottom of the vessel over time and a quantitative evaluation can be performed.
