Woulff bottles can be used as part of vacuum apparatus as collecting vessels for solvents and for the washing of gases and dissolving them in solvents. The heavy wall contruction of these bottles means that they are suitable for vacuum applications and are often also used as an intermediate vessel to prevent spontaneous drop-off of the vacuum and the associated liquid suck-back into the vacuum pump.
